About This Training Course

This Tower Crane (CT) Training Course is designed for participants to gain the necessary skills to safely operate a tower crane as described in the National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work.

On completion of the Tower Crane (CT) Training Course participants will be able to perform pre-operational checks; set-up and operate the crane competently; shut down and dismantle and perform various operations competently.

Subjects Covered

This Tower Crane (CT) Training Course will cove the plan which is based on the Unit of Competencies within the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF):


• UEPOPS201A - Comply with Occupational Health and Safety Policy and Procedures
• UEPOPS230A Operate Lifting and Load Shifting Equipment for loads greater than ten tonnes
• WorkSafe Western Australia Certification

• Legislation in the Workplace - O.S.H. Acts and Regulations; Mines Safety Inspection Act and Regulations; specific regulations dealing with cranes and AS 1418/2550; codes of practice where applicable.
• Plan Work - Crane type and its capacity; site requirements and rules; workplace hazards; priorities; emergency procedures.
• Lifting Gear Fibre Rope - Tag lines; slings (inspection and sling capacity).
• F.S.W.R. (Flexible Steel Wire Rope) - Slings, W.L.L. marks; construction of wire rope; inspection; care and maintenance of wire rope; discard factors in accordance with AS 1666; W.L.L. - breaking force; S.W.L. - safety factor; crane ropes; types in use; lubrication; crane ropes.
• Synthetic Slings - Flat web; round slings; manufacturers requirements; inspection; care and maintenance; W.L.L. - breaking force; S.W.L. - safety factor.
• Chain - ISO grading and AS grading; construction grade; markings and manufacturer markings; safety factor; care and maintenance; W.L.L. - breaking force; S.W.L. - safety factor; tags; fittings; description and use of.
• Other Lifting - Gear used in industry.
• Dual Lifts - Relevant AS 2550.1 Section 7.19; calculation of load share and sling points.
• Slinging Practice (Slings in General) - Safe use procedures for all sling types; revving factors; angle factors; determine capacity required; double wrap all slings.
• Calculation of Mass - Calculate area; calculate volume; other methods of establishing load mass.
• Rigging Appliances - Chain block, chain puller, plate clamp; shackles; spreader/lifting and equalizing gear.
• Crane Operation - Pre-start & pre-operation checks.
• Crane Setup - Outriggers where applicable to be set up as per manufacturers specifications; explain different crane base set, i.e. expendable and fixed base and floor climbing tower cranes; explain ties on cranes and manufacturers requirements; wind factors and height restrictions above ties; testing procedure; load chart use; areas of operation; structural capabilities; AS 2550 & 1418; signals in accordance with Australian Standards; erection; dismantling; climbing of tower cranes.
• Practical Training - Operate tower crane to manufacturers requirements; sling and move loads as directed by dogman/rigger using appropriate signals; shut down of crane to be to manufacturer’s specifications; where cranes are left in free slew position, crane to clear other structures when crane moves with wind.

Training Course Outcomes

AUSTRALIA
At the end of this Tower Crane (CT) Training Course Competent candidates will be issued with a Statement of Attainment (CT) and a nationally recognized WorkSafe 60 day interim certificate. WorkSafe Western Australia will issue a Certificate of Competency within that 60 day period.

INTERNATIONAL
On successful completion of this Tower Crane (CT) Training Course, candidates will be issued with an Australian Skills Training Ltd Certificate of Competency in Tower Crane operation.

Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites for this Tower Crane (CT) Training Course.

Other Information

Work Safe will issue a Certificate of Competency within a 60 day period. Certificate fee - AUS$50 per person (Darwin) and AUS$76 per person (Perth).
